ePass - Biometric Passport Renewal App

ePass - Biometric Passport Renewal App

ePass is a government-backed biometric passport renewal mobile application that enables citizens of the Republic of Bénin living abroad to renew their biometric passports remotely. The app leverages contactless biometric technology to capture passport data, live facial portraits, fingerprints, signatures, and supporting documents without requiring physical embassy visits. It also provides end-to-end application tracking and home delivery of renewed passports, making it a complete digital identity service for diaspora users.

Problem

Beninese citizens living abroad struggled to renew their passports due to mandatory in-person visits, high travel costs, long wait times,Beninese citizens living abroad struggled to renew their passports due to mandatory in-person visits, high travel and accommodation costs, long wait times at embassies, and limited visibility into application progress and next steps, which often left applicants uncertain, stressed, and dependent on repeated follow-ups.

The Solution

Design a secure, intuitive, and end-to-end biometric passport renewal experience that allows diaspora citizens to scan their existing passports, capture biometrics remotely, submit documents, track application status, and receive their renewed passport via home delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • User research & problem definition

  • Persona creation

  • User journey mapping

  • Biometric flow design (passport scan, live capture, fingerprints)

  • Wireframing (paper & digital)

  • Prototyping (low & high fidelity)

  • Usability testing

  • Accessibility & security considerations

Result

Impact:
The design demonstrates how a biometric-first digital passport renewal system can eliminate physical barriers, improve identity security, and modernize government services for diaspora citizens.

Takeaway

What I learned:
I learned how to design biometric enrollment flows, reduce friction in identity verification, and balance usability with government-grade security requirements.
